Georges Jacob (organist)

Georges Armand Paul Jacob (born August 19, 1877 in Paris ; † December 28, 1950 there ) was a French organist , improviser and composer .

Life

He began his first musical studies at the École Niedermeyer in Paris. He entered the Conservatory in 1896 and in 1900 won first prize for organ in Alexandre Guilmant's class . From 1892 to 1912 Jacob gave organ concerts at the Schola Cantorum . His aim was to make the best works of classical and modern organ literature heard. As a composer he wrote and published numerous works. In addition, he began to publish the most important works by Johann Sebastian Bach , provided with explanatory comments.

From 1902 to 1914 Georges Jacob was professor of piano at the Schola Cantorum in Paris. He was also organist and cantor of Notre Dame de la Gare from 1897 to 1903 and organist at the organ of Saint Louis d'Antin from 1903 to 1906. From 1907 until his death in 1950 he held the office of organist and cantor of Saint Ferdinand des ternes .
