Georgi Nikolaevich Babakin
Georgy Babakin ( Russian Георгий Николаевич Бабакин ; born October 31 . Jul / 13. November 1914 greg. In Moscow , † 3. August 1971 ) was a Soviet aerospace engineer. From 1965 until his death he was the chief designer of the Lavochkin design bureau (OKB-301) and was responsible for the design of the Mars 2 and 3 Mars probes, for example .
It is believed that his death, coincident with the loss of the Soyuz 11 crew and the N1 launcher, had a strong demoralizing effect on the Soviet space program.
The Babakin crater on the moon and the crater of the same name on Mars were named after him in his honor.
