Georgi Borissowitsch Schulpin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georgi Borissowitsch Schulpin ( Russian Георгий Борисович Шульпи́н , English transcription Georgiy Borisovich Shul'pin or Shulpin; * 1946 in Moscow ) is a Russian chemist.

Schulpin studied chemistry at Lomonossow University with a degree in 1969 and received his doctorate in 1975 at the later Nemesjanow Institute for Organometallic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences under Alexander Nikolajewitsch Nesmejanow (on the chemistry of ferrocene and similar complexes). From 1978 he was at the Semjonow Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Moscow. In 2013 he completed his habilitation (Russian doctorate). He is a senior scientist in the Kinetics and Catalysis Department of the Semyonov Institute.

He was visiting scholar and visiting professor in Brazil, France, Prague, India, Italy, Japan, at RWTH Aachen University, Switzerland, Thailand, Portugal, York and the University of Florida .

He deals with organometallic chemistry, metal complexes in catalysis, in particular in the oxidation of hydrocarbons , activation and functionalization of CH bonds in saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, with photocatalysis , biomimetic oxidation and green chemistry.

With Alexander Evgenjewitsch Schilow , he discovered the metallization reaction of aromatics with hexachloro-platinum under the action of heat, light or gamma radiation in 1979 (and further developments in the 1980s: photoelectrophilic substitution in aromatics, photoplatinization, photodehydration). He developed several efficient catalytic reactions of the oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons with chlorine complexes of transition metals and hydroformylation reactions .

He also published popular science chemistry books in Russian.

His wife Lidija Schulpina is also a scientist at the Semjonow Institute.

He is a corresponding member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences. In 2017 he was one of the Clarivate Citation Laureates (with John Bercaw and Robert Bergman for contributions to CH activation ).
