Georgios Kyprios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georgios Kyprios , also Georgios of Cyprus , ( Greek Γεώργιος ὁ Κύπριος , born in Lapithos ) was a Byzantine geographer at the beginning of the 7th century.

Apart from his writing, no information has been passed on to Georgios Kyprios. The work is a geographically ordered, partly provided with explanations list of nearly 600 cities, settlements and fortifications of the Byzantine Empire , which was edited by Heinrich Gelzer under the title Descriptio orbis Romani . It is available in an editorially revised and expanded version shortly before the middle of the 9th century, which probably goes back to the Armenian Basilius of Ialimbana. Its contribution is known today under the name Notitiae episcopatuum Ecclesiae Constantinopolitanae No. 4.

In the style of the Synekdemos received from Hierocles from the 6th century, Georgios is divided into administrative units under civil law, the dioceses and eparchies . In contrast to Hierocles, whose Synekdemos, as a kind of "travel companion" for business trips, only covered the eastern territory, Georgios also took into account the west with Italy and Africa, which are at the top of his list. In this context, he provides important clues for the Eparchy Annonaria in northeast Italy for the border between the Byzantine sphere of influence and the Longobard Empire established there . In line 1105 he provides the information about the city of Lapithos that he, Georgios the Cypriot who wrote the book, was born there.
