Georgios Papastamkos

Georgios Papastamkos ( Greek Γεώργιος Παπαστάμκος , born March 5, 1955 in Platanorrevma ) is a Greek politician ( Nea Dimokratia ).

Papastamkos obtained a diploma in legal faculty and the degree in economics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and received his doctorate at the University of Tuebingen . He worked in research at the Center for International and European Financial Law and at the Law Faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2001 he became Professor of International and European Studies at the University of Piraeus . He is also the Jean Monnet Chair and Vice-Rector of the University of Piraeus.

Papastamkos represented in the Greek Parliament the county Imathia and was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the economy. He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 and has been Vice-President since January 18, 2012.

On March 13, 2013, Papastamkos collapsed during a voting marathon he led in the plenary chamber of the European Parliament, seconds after he announced that he needed a short break for personal reasons. Three doctors present among the parliamentarians provided first aid before Papastamkos was taken to the university hospital in Strasbourg.
