Yaki Imo

A roasted sweet potato , Japanese name Yakiimo ( Japanese 焼 き 芋 ), is a baked or roasted sweet potato , which is a traditional Japanese snack . This snack was imported from China ( Chinese  烤红薯 , Pinyin kǎo hóngshǔ  - “fried red potato”) via Korea ( Korean 군 고구마 gungoguma ) in Japan.

They are especially eaten in the cold season. As in China and Korea, they are traditionally offered as a street snack and sold by street vendors who often sing a traditional song. They are as popular in Asia as the roasted chestnuts on the streets of Europe.

The food is prepared on the street on special trailers, mini-cars or carts. There are two different types. Baking or roasting on hot pebbles is common (in this case they are called 石 焼 き 芋 , Ishiyakiimo , “stone-”), which makes the sweet potatoes sweeter. They can also be cooked in special grids on charcoal stoves without coming into contact with the charcoal briquettes. It can also be prepared at home with special grills.

The pink sweet potatoes "Satsuma-imo" are particularly suitable.
