Gerald Rufus Isaacs, 2nd Marquess of Reading (born December 10, 1889 , † September 19, 1960 ) was a British lawyer and politician .

Life and activity

Isaacs was the eldest son of Rufus Isaacs, 1st Marquess of Reading , and his wife Alice Edith, b. Cohen. He was educated at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford.

From 1915 to 1918 Isaacs took part in the First World War, in which he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel (Lieutenant Colonel).

In 1929 Isaacs ran unsuccessfully as the Liberal Party candidate for the constituency of Blackburn for the British House of Commons. In 1935 he moved in as a member of the House of Lords, succeeding his father .

As a prominent Jew in public life in Great Britain, Isaacs was classified by the National Socialist police as an enemy of the state: In the spring of 1940 the Reich Main Security Office in Berlin put him on the special wanted list GB , a directory of people who would be killed in the event of a successful invasion and occupation of the British Isles by the Wehrmacht should be located and arrested by the SS special commandos following the occupation troops with special priority.

In the 2nd Churchill government , Isaacs was appointed Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs in 1951. He held this position until 1953, when he was promoted to Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He held this post for the remainder of the Churchill government and the Eden government . Also since 1953 Isaacs belonged to the Privy Council , the British Privy Council .

On the occasion of the formation of the government by Harold Macmillan in January 1957, Isaacs resigned from the government.

Isaacs is buried in Golders Green Jewish Cemetery.

Isaacs had been married since 1914 to Eva Violet Mond, a daughter of Alfred Moritz Mond, 1st Baron Melchett (1868–1930). His title and seat in the House of Lords inherited from his son, Michael Alfred Rufus Isaacs, 3rd Marquess of Reading (1916–1980).
