The Gerard lobelia is a short-lived herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 75 to 100 centimeters. The leaves, which are often red, are up to 10 centimeters long and broadly lanceolate to elliptical. The crown is colored purple-violet.
The flowering period extends from August to September.
