from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerd Uwe Auffarth (born July 28, 1964 in Delmenhorst ) is a German ophthalmologist and professor of ophthalmology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and director of the David J. Apple Center for Vision Research in Heidelberg. Auffarth's specialty in clinic and research are refractive surgery and cataract surgery. In the “Power List” of The Ophthalmologist magazine, the ranking of the world's most influential ophthalmologists, Auffarth is in second place.

Life and education

Gerd U. Auffarth grew up in Delmenhorst and Remscheid and studied human medicine at the RWTH Aachen . During the clinical part of his studies he received an Albert Schweitzer grant and worked for three months in the Lambaréné jungle hospital founded by Albert Schweitzer in Gabon , Central Africa - a medical activity on which he later wrote a report. After obtaining his medical license in 1990, Auffarth spent 1992-1994 on a scholarship from the Max Kade Foundation in New York, a research stay with David J. Apple from the Center of Intraocular Lens Research at the Medical University of South Carolina - the name of this pioneer in the pathology of the eye ( especially under the effects of the implantation of artificial lenses) today is the responsibility of the research institute headed by Auffarth. After returning from the USA, Auffarth began his clinical and scientific work at the Heidelberg University Eye Clinic, where he became a specialist in ophthalmology in 1996 and qualified as a professor in 1999.

Scientific and medical work

Gerd U. Auffarth was appointed director of the Heidelberg University Eye Clinic in April 2011, after having been managing director of the clinic for two years. At that time, Auffarth already had such a high international reputation in cataract and refractive surgery that he was one of the few doctors from the western world to be invited to work as an eye surgeon in North Korea in 2006. The operation of cataract ( cataract ) and the development of highly innovative intraocular lenses for visual rehabilitation after surgery are a focus of clinical and scientific activity in Auffarths. The use of the femtosecond laser in cataract surgery is the focus of his medical work and his numerous publications. Auffarth has been Secretary General of the German-speaking Society for Intraocular Lens Implantation , Interventional and Refractive Surgery (DGII) since 2018 . From 2012 to 2016 he was President of the DGII.
