The German-speaking Society for Intraocular Lens Implantation, Interventional and Refractive Surgery (DGII) (in international literature: German Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery) is a scientific association of ophthalmologists active in surgery in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

history

The DGII was founded in 1987 in Giessen, where the first of 32 annual congresses took place. As the chosen name "German-speaking Society for Intraocular Lens Implantation" suggests, the founding members were primarily interested in the new methods in cataract surgery ( cataracts ) that were established in the 1980s, such as the emergence of intraocular lenses and phacoemulsification .

In the following years the spectrum of the DGII expanded noticeably. Although the cataract - and Refractive Surgery continues to be a focus in the training program and in the publications of the society and its members, but it now covers almost the entire surgical ophthalmology, including surgery of glaucoma and vitreoretinal surgery (surgery on the vitreous humor and on the back of the eye).

Conferences and publications

The annual congress, which takes place in spring, offers courses, lectures and wetlabs on various ophthalmic surgical procedures. At the conference, the DGII annually awards a science award, a publication award and, from 2019, a media award. The lectures and presentations of the conferences will be published in a congress volume. The members are informed via the website and the "DGII aktuell" newsletter. DGII experts create guidelines and recommendations on topics related to ophthalmic surgery, including the prevention of severe infections ( endophthalmitis ) after cataract surgery. Reports on the congresses of the DGII appear in relevant specialist journals such as the journal "Ophthalmo-Chirurgie" from Kaden Verlag .

Burkhard Dick (Bochum) has been president of DGII since 2016 , Albert J. Augustin (Karlsruhe) is vice-president and Gerd U. Auffarth (Heidelberg) is secretary general . The next DGII congress will take place in Mainz from February 13 to 15, 2020, with a focus on cataract and refractive surgery, glaucoma and cornea .
