Gerda Weyand

Gerda Weyand (born November 5, 1912 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ; † 1995 ) was a German gynecologist and was employed as a concentration camp doctor in the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp .

Life

After studying medicine at the universities of Heidelberg and Nuremberg and completing specialist training , she worked briefly at the Ludwigshafen am Rhein municipal hospital. From September 5, 1939, she worked as a camp doctor in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Here she worked a. a. with Erika Jantzen and met her future husband, the on- site doctor Walter Sonntag . Both married on July 21, 1941 in nearby Fürstenberg / Havel . The marriage had a child until 1948.

Gerhard Schiedlausky , who replaced Sunday as the on-site doctor in Ravensbrück in 1941, testified that his relationship with Weyand had caused displeasure in higher positions and that the replacement took place because it was not customary for a “husband to be the superior of his wife at the same time Position “get employed. On the other hand, Sonntag stated in court that he was transferred in 1941 at his own request (see his biography). Gerda Weyand was replaced by Rolf Rosenthal and left Ravensbrück in July 1941.

At the fourth of the seven Ravensbrück trials , Weyand defended her husband in court. It is not clear why she was not also charged as a concentration camp doctor. After her husband was executed, she took her maiden name. She last lived in Ludwigshafen.
