Gerhard Dieter

Gerhard Dieter (* 1933 ; † September 9, 2013 ) was a German boxer and boxing trainer.

Life

As an amateur boxer, Dieter, who was discovered by Bruno Kurtzer and competed in the weight class up to 63.5 kilograms, fought 228 fights for the Spandau Box-Club in 1926 between 1951 and 1966. Between 1956 and 1963 he was eight times Berlin champion as well 1960, 1962, 1963 and 1964 German champion, in 1961 he was German runner-up. At the European Championships in 1963 he reached the semi-finals and won bronze. In the pre-Olympic eliminations between boxers from the FRG and the GDR , Dieter dropped out in the semifinals in May 1964. In the course of his boxing career he defeated the Olympic champions Jerzy Kulej  and Richard McTaggart .

Dieter, nicknamed "Bubi" and known for his brisk sayings and a clove of garlic in his pocket, worked as a trainer alongside Kurtzer in SBC 26 before he worked for the Berlin Boxing Association. In 1973 Dieter went to the professional camp as a trainer and looked after Eckhard Dagge . Under his leadership, Dagge became European champion in 1975 and world champion in 1976. Dieter returned to his job as the national coach of the Berlin Boxing Association and remained in office until he retired in 1996. The best-known boxers Dieter looked after in the amateur field include Klaus Niketta , Peter Suckrow, Oktay Urkal , Sven Ottke , Adnan Özcoban, Ulrich Junger, Thomas Ulrich and Graciano Rocchigiani .
