Gerhard Menzel (entrepreneur)

Gerhard Menzel (born December 4, 1911 in Lommatzsch ; † September 20, 1997 in Braunschweig ) was a grandson of Carl Menzel and an entrepreneur in the glass industry.

He followed the family tradition and also worked in the glass industry. In 1945 he started his own business in Braunschweig . After the Second World War he was so successful that he became a medium-sized company. "Menzel Glas" became a household name. In 1955 he opened a factory in Braunschweig. The company he founded, Gerhard Menzel GmbH, is now part of the American Thermo Fisher Scientific group.

However, he remained loyal to his hometown Lommatzsch and supported it through large donations, among other things. In 1994 he was granted honorary citizenship of the city of Lommatzsch as thanks and in recognition of his services.

Gerhard Menzel died on September 20, 1997 at the age of 86 in Braunschweig.

His company, which is now part of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Group, is one of the largest manufacturers of laboratory glassware. This includes microscope slides, cover slips, diagnostics, and adhesion slides.
