Life

Gerhard Neukranz was born on October 26, 1924 in Magdeburg. After attending elementary school, he served a period of service in the Reich Labor Service before he was drafted into military service. In 1942 he joined the NSDAP . Towards the end of the war he was briefly captured by the British, from which he was soon released. In 1945 he joined the KPD and co-founded the Antifa Youth Committee in Magdeburg, a forerunner of the FDJ. He oversaw this committee as a municipal employee. After the FDJ was founded, Neukranz first moved to the FDJ district leadership in Magdeburg, later he became FDJ chairman in the Magdeburg administrative district. In 1947 Neukranz was delegated to the first two-year course at the party college "Karl Marx" as one of 56 graduates . After completing his studies, he was initially employed as a secretary in the FDJ state management in Saxony-Anhalt, and in 1950 he was appointed first secretary of the FDJ state management. In terms of party politics, the SED strengthened Neukranz's position by attending the III. SED party congress in July 1950 when one of the youngest representatives was elected as a candidate for the SED Central Committee. Due to his function as FDJ country chief, the central council of the FDJ Neukranz co-opted in the same year. In 1952 he was regularly elected by acclamation to the Secretariat of the Central Council of the FDJ at the fourth parliament of the FDJ in Leipzig. In January 1954 Neukranz was relieved of his position as secretary of the FDJ central council at the 7th meeting of the FDJ central council. Accordingly, he was not confirmed again as a candidate for the SED Central Committee at the IVth Party Congress of the SED. Neukranz moved to the Ministry of Culture, which was newly created at the beginning of 1954, where he initially worked as an employee of the main department for cultural mass work, later he headed the club and cultural houses department within this main department. He then worked for some time as a personal advisor to the deputy minister of culture, Hans Pischner , before heading the main department "Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries" in the Ministry of Culture from 1958. Gerhard Neukranz only died at the age of 45 after a long and serious illness at Christmas 1969.
