Gerhard Pfister (born May 31, 1947 in Thyrow ) is a German mathematician who deals with algebraic geometry .

Pfister studied mathematics at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he graduated in 1970 and obtained his doctorate in 1971 under Herbert Kurke . In 1976 he completed his habilitation and was then a lecturer and from 1983 professor at the Humboldt University. From 1993 he was a professor at the University of Kaiserslautern .

Among other things, Pfister dealt with the resolution of singularities of algebraic varieties and, together with Gert-Martin Greuel, developed the computer algebra system Singular , which has applications in algebraic geometry.
