Gert-Martin Greuel (born October 16, 1944 in Köslin ) is a German mathematician who deals with computer algebra, algebraic geometry (singularity theory) and complex analysis.

Life

Greuel studied mathematics and physics at the University of Göttingen and the ETH Zurich from 1965 to 1971 . In 1971 he completed his diploma in Göttingen, where he was a research assistant and received his doctorate in 1973 with Egbert Brieskorn ( The Gauss-Manin connection of isolated singularities from complete averages ). He then worked as an assistant at the University of Bonn , where he completed his habilitation in 1980. Since 1981 he has been a professor at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern , where he has headed the Center for Computer Algebra since 1993. His senior research professorship , which he started in 2010, ended in 2015.

From 2002 to 2013 he succeeded Matthias Kreck as director of the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach , from 2010 to 2013 chairman of the European Research Centers on Mathematics (ERCOM) and from 2013 to 2015 a member of the Executive Committee of the European Mathematical Society (EMS).

Greuel developed with Gerhard Pfister (also a professor in Kaiserslautern) and others the computer algebra system Singular with applications in algebraic geometry, especially the investigation of singularities, a specialty of his teacher Brieskorn, on which Greuel also worked.

In 2009, the Leibniz University in Hanover awarded Greuel an honorary doctorate.

In 2011 he was made an honorary member of the Real Sociedad Matematica Espanola (RSME).

From 2012 to 2015 Gert-Martin Greuel was also editor-in-chief of the zbMATH database (formerly Zentralblatt für Mathematik) .

In 2013 he received the Mathematics Media Prize (with Andreas Matt) from the German Mathematicians Association (DMV).
