Gerhard S. Schürch (born September 30, 1953 in Langnau ) is a Swiss woodcutter, graphic artist, painter, publisher and seminar leader who lives and works in Chabrey (Vully VD). He is a member of XYLON (international association of wood cutters).

Life

After training as a typesetter and printer in Langnau i. E. Schürch completed a stage as a graphic artist and book maker in a publishing house in Bern. This was followed by training in typographic design at the Zurich School of Applied Arts , before he founded the Atelier & Editions Dendron in Bern in 1976 as a freelance painter, wood cutter, graphic artist, printer and publisher. From his first location in Bern's Matte district, he moved to Mont Vully in the 1980s, where he set up his studio and publishing house in the wine-growing village of Lugnorre . In 1990 he moved to Chabrey (Vully VD), and in 1991 the studio and course house "Maison des corbeaux" opened in Chabrey together with Verena Magdalena Gerber. In 1993, daughter Malaïka Schürch was born, who now also works as a freelance graphic designer. Schürch has been managing and looking after the Maison des Corbeaux as a one-man company since 2007.

Create

Schürch's artistic work includes color woodcuts and oil paintings. In various group and solo exhibitions for printmaking and painting and in the context of work conferences with members of the Swiss Xylon, the artist drew attention to his work at home and abroad.

As a graphic artist, he designs books by various authors, especially volumes of poetry, many of which he illustrated with his own color woodcuts. Schürch takes on design assignments for various projects for individuals, communities, institutions and those involved in the cultural sector.

The Dendron publishing house established itself primarily with contemporary Swiss poetry and is characterized by extraordinarily aesthetically designed volumes, many of which are illustrated with woodcuts. He has received various grants from the canton and city of Bern for poetry publications and prizes for the most beautiful Swiss books. To date, over 80 publications have been published by Dendron.

Schürch has been offering courses for children and adults since 1986 and has accompanied various course projects for groups of all ages. In his work with groups and individuals, Schürch uses the media of multi-color woodblock prints and sign painting to initiate and promote personal growth, the development of individual skills and collaborative work in groups.
