Gerhard Zechmeister

Gerhard Zechmeister (born April 6, 1960 in St. Pölten ) is an Austrian tuba player and music historian .

Zechmeister first completed a degree in tuba at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Leopold Kolar . After studying music history at Friedrich C. Heller (1985-1987) he obtained his diploma thesis Historical, acoustic and instrumental technical aspects of using the Wiener bass tuba in the literature the title of Artium Magister .

Zechmeister was then a founding member of the OCULUS Brass Quintet (1981–1988) and the initiator for the further development of the “Wiener Konzerttuba” in cooperation with the Austro-Czech musical instrument factory Musica (in Steyr). He completed his military service with the Guard Music Vienna (1988). From 1994 to 1997 he was tuba player with the United Philharmonic Vienna.

He then initiated several research projects for the further development of the tuba and other Viennese forms of wind instruments.
