The Guard Music Vienna (also military music of the Guard Battalion Vienna ) is one of nine military bands in Austria. It is part of the guard battalion of the Austrian Armed Forces , stationed in the Maria-Theresien-Kaserne in the 13th Viennese district Hietzing and consists of 60 musicians. The commander of the guard music is also the military music chief of the armed forces.

history

After the Austrian State Treaty came into force , on September 26, 1955, the provisional Border Guard Department 1 marched through the streets of Vienna, accompanied by a musical procession made up of musicians from the department. As a result, the border guard department was renamed the Army Guard Battalion , and from January 1956 the band of the Army Guard Battalion took over all representative tasks in Vienna from the Vienna Police Music . On May 15, 1957, the renaming of the Army Guard Battalion took place in Guard Battalion , the band of the Army Guard Battalion became the Gardemusik renamed.

Military bandmaster Friedrich Hodick compiled the Great Austrian Zapfenstreich in 1965 , and Anton Sollfellner was responsible for the final editing. Hodick also composed the presentation march that is played when walking along the front. A separate march was composed for each newly elected Federal President , for example the 2017 Dr. Van Der Bellen March and 2004 the Dr. Heinz Fischer March by Bernhard Heher or the Dr. Thomas Klestil March by Hans Damage contractor .

As of October 2014, the closure of five Austrian military bands was discussed for cost reasons. In December 2014, the government agreed to keep the nine locations while reducing the staff to 20 musicians per federal state. The Guard Music was the only Austrian military band that was not affected by the staff reduction. In May 2016, the Austrian decided Governor's Conference , together with Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil a halt to the army reform.

Drum ponies

The ponies that were used to pull the bass drum were among the peculiarities of the guard music , including the ponies named Donner and Blitz . From 1977 pony mother Rosa Zatschkowitsch looked after the ponies in the service of the armed forces in addition to basic military servants. In 2004 she was awarded the Golden Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria by Federal President Thomas Klestil , and she was also awarded the Bronze Medal of Merit by the Austrian Brass Music Association . The former journalist and photographer, who died in 2012 at the age of 92, was bid farewell with military honors. During the Guard Music's summer vacation, the ponies were stationed in Hochfilzen in Tyrol. The last ponies, Sergeant Amadeus and Corporal Mozart , were retired in 2015 and no longer filled.

activities

One of the main tasks is the musical accompaniment of state receptions , accreditations of ambassadors and other so-called honors, for example conducts . In addition, the Guard Music produced over twenty recordings, in addition to military marches, including recordings of works by Johann Strauss , Carl Michael Ziehrer and Joseph Lanner .

The annual performances include the Federal President's New Year's reception for the diplomatic corps, the spring concert of the symphonic wind orchestra and, since 1978, the arcade courtyard concert in the arcade courtyard of the Vienna City Hall . During the Vienna ball season , various balls in the Vienna Hofburg , such as the officers' ball, are musically framed by the ball orchestra or the big band of the Guard Music . The Guard Music's autumn concert took place in the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein until 2001, but has not taken place since then due to the shortening of the military service and the reduction in the number of strings. During the Christmas season, the program includes performances with light in the dark or the illumination of the Christmas tree in front of the Vienna City Hall. The Guard Music was repeatedly present at international military music meetings abroad.

In February 2019, the Guard Music played as part of the Vienna Opera Ball when the guests were received on the red carpet.

The Guard Music also conducts a 12 to 15 week course for non-commissioned officers of all nine Austrian military music bands every year.
