The Austrian Wind Music Festival is a music festival for wind orchestras in Austria that has been held annually in Vienna since 1980 . In 1983 foreign brass bands took part for the first time.

history

The brass music festival was brought into being by the then Vienna City Councilor for Culture Helmut Zilk , and it is organized by the cultural department of the City of Vienna in cooperation with the Austrian Brass Music Association and the Vienna Military Command .

In 1980, the then Federal Kapellmeister Rudolf Zeman was in charge of the overall artistic direction, and from 1981 Johann Schadenbauer (from 1978 to 2009 Regional Kapellmeister of Vienna) was responsible.

As part of the music festival, concerts are given in all districts of Vienna, there is a pageant from Heldenplatz to Rathausplatz with a final concert . In the courtyard of Schönbrunn Palace , marching bands face the march scoring. In 2006 the finals of the “ International Competition for Wind Music Conductors ” took place in the large broadcasting hall of the ORF (broadcasting house).

Participants are two to three brass bands from each of the nine federal states of Austria and South Tyrol (Italy) and, in some cases, other guest bands from abroad. In 2008 around 36 bands with around 1,800 musicians took part in the event. In 1995, 50 years after the end of the Second World War , military bands from the countries of the four allies were invited. So far, bands from more than 20 nations have taken part in the Austrian Brass Music Festival.

The 35th Austrian Brass Music Festival planned for May 2014 had to be canceled due to bad weather.
