The Gerhart Hauptmann House. German-Eastern European Forum (formerly “ House of the German East ”) is the seat of the foundation of the same name and is located at Bismarckstrasse 90 in Düsseldorf . The building was built by Walter Kroner and Bruno Lambart from 1960 to 1962. The foundation serves to deal with contemporary European and German history and has an extensive special library on the history of East Central and Eastern Europe.

Description of the structure

The lower floors of the five-story concrete building are fully glazed. Above that, a carillon was installed in the left third of the facade. This is surrounded by the flags of the countries of Eastern Europe. The other two thirds of the facade show a simple two-story row of windows, consisting of two rows of square windows. Behind it is the Eichendorff Hall. Above there are strips of concrete slabs with rows of windows made up of seamlessly adjacent square windows.

history

The building was opened by the Haus des Deutschen Ostens foundation in June 1963 and served as a meeting place for the displaced. In 1992 the foundation “House of the German East” , supported by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , became “ Gerhart-Hauptmann -Haus. German-Eastern European Forum ”renamed.
