The Germania monument in Essen district Borbeck-Mitte is on the then named Germaniaplatz.

Monument and history

The Germaniadenkmal was erected by the Borbeck mayor at the time and ceremoniously unveiled on October 17, 1880. It stands on Germaniaplatz, later named after it on April 30, 1891, which was used as a cemetery by the parish of St. Dionysius from 1840 to 1857. More than 2500 deceased found their final resting place here. The director of the Phoenix blast furnace plant in Bergeborbeck and alderman of the Borbeck mayor's office, Friedrich Lange (1837–1918), was chairman of the monument committee.

This is to commemorate the German wars of unification of 1866 and 1870/71 and honor the fallen. The Düsseldorf sculptor Leo Müsch created it. The stone standing figure of Germania with sword and laurel wreath and the imperial eagle at her feet stands on a stepped sandstone plinth at the site of the old cemetery. The Germania figure from the Niederwald monument near Rüdesheim am Rhein served as a model . The inscription on the Borbeck monument reads:

“Your sons who remained glorious in the campaigns of 1866 and 1870–71. Borbeck mayor "

There is also a plaque with the names of the fallen on the right side of the base:
