Germanos of Patras

Germanos (birth name Γεώργιος Γκόζιας / Κοντζιάς [Georgios Gozias / Kotzias]; neugriech known as Παλαιών Πατρών Γερμανός.) (* 25. March 1771 in Dimitsana , † the 30th May 1826 in Messolonghi ) was Metropolitan of the Greek Orthodox Church in Patras .

Before his ordination as metropolitan by the patriarch Gregory V , Germanos was a priest in Smyrna .

Role in the Greek struggle for freedom

After a not clearly documented tradition he blessed the near Kalavrita nearby Agia Lavra Monastery , the flag of the resistance against the foreign rule of the Ottomans in the Peloponnese freedom fighters significantly concerned and vowed this one on the further struggle for an independent Greek republic. In Greek historiography this is considered to be the beginning of the Greek struggle for freedom . The monastery has become a national shrine and the March 25th national holiday of Greece. The picture of the blessing of the flag by Germanos by Theodoros Vryzakis hangs in the National Gallery in Athens.
