The Gerner Bridge is an iron and reinforced concrete arch bridge over the Nymphenburg Palace Canal in Munich .

location

The Gerner Bridge connects Gerner Strasse in the Gern district with Renatastrasse in the Neuhausen district. Its apex offers a direct view of the Hubertusbrunnen at the eastern end of the palace canal , while the view of Nymphenburg Palace, one and a half kilometers away , is interrupted in the west by the Ludwig Ferdinand Bridge .

history

Originally, bridges were not planned over the palace canal built by Elector Karl Albrecht in the years 1728–30, which was designed solely as a visual axis for Nymphenburg Palace and an axis for the two access avenues . Due to the growth of the city and the associated increase in traffic, the Ludwig Ferdinand Bridge had to be built in 1892, which was followed by the Gerner Bridge in 1897. The reinforced concrete bridge, which was ultra-modern at the time, was externally provided with neo-baroque arch lines and railings in order to adapt it to the surroundings of the royal palace.

The bridge was rebuilt in 1927 and renovated in 1994.

It is a listed building

Technical specifications

The reinforced and reinforced concrete bridge has a clamped arch with a clear width of 16 m. It is 29 m long and 10 m wide, including the ramps. Today it has a load capacity of 24 tons, but is still closed to motor vehicles.
