The Ludwig-Ferdinand-Bridge , named after Ludwig Ferdinand Prince of Bavaria , is an iron and reinforced concrete arch bridge over the Nymphenburg Palace Canal in Munich .

location

The Ludwig-Ferdinand-Brücke connects the Notburgastraße with the Menzinger Straße. Its apex offers a direct view of Nymphenburg Palace .

history

Originally, no bridges were planned for the palace canal between the access avenues to Nymphenburg Palace far from the gates of Munich. Later a pedestrian walkway was created. The growth of the city meant that buildings and the road network continued to advance towards the castle. The Royal Court Building Office finally commissioned a bridge with the stipulation that it would meet the aesthetic requirements of the immediate vicinity of the Royal Palace and the avenues on both sides in every way. In 1892 it was built according to plans by the architect Friedrich von Thiersch as a single-arch road bridge with a span of 17.30 m and an arrow height of 1.88 m. The bridge, executed in Monier construction , was Munich's first reinforced concrete arch. In 1914, the bridge was widened by 8.80 m on the side facing the castle to accommodate tram tracks. The parapets, pylons, wing walls and the arch cladding were removed and then put back in front of the new bridge arch. In 1956 the bridge was significantly changed and widened again to 33 m, in 1992 it was renovated.

traffic

The Ludwig Ferdinand Bridge is an important road bridge in Munich. The four-lane bridge with a double-track tram route between the lanes, turning lanes in both directions as well as bicycle and sidewalks on both sides directs the traffic coming from the center via Arnulfstraße and Romanplatz via Menzinger Straße and Verdistraße to the A8 motorway to Augsburg .
