Gernot Kocher

Gernot Kocher (born January 7, 1942 in Graz ) is an Austrian legal historian.

Kocher completed his law studies at the University of Graz in 1966 with a doctorate in law. The habilitation took place in 1975 with Berthold Sutter (1923-2004).

In 1977 he was appointed associate professor. In 1988 he succeeded Hermann Baltl as a full professor at the University of Graz , whose textbook on Austrian legal history he continued in several editions in the following years. From 1991 to 2005 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law in Graz.

One of Kocher's main research areas is legal iconography . So he built up the important Graz legal iconographic database . He is co-founder of the working group for legal iconography and co-editor of the series Signa Iuris - contributions to legal iconography, legal archeology and legal folklore .

Because of his achievements, he received numerous awards, including the Josef Krainer Prize and the Leopold Kunschak Prize . He is an honorary doctor from the University of Pécs . The Harz Association for History and Archeology dedicated the 32nd volume of Harz Research to him for his 75th birthday.
