Hermann Baltl (born February 2, 1918 in Graz ; † October 20, 2004 there ) was an Austrian lawyer and legal historian .

Life

Hermann Baltl received his doctorate in law from the University of Graz in 1939. In 1946 he completed his habilitation in the subject “German Legal History and Austrian Constitutional and Administrative History”. In 1956 he became an associate professor at the newly created Institute for Austrian Legal History, which he headed until 1988 as head of the institute. He was succeeded on October 1, 1988 by Gernot Kocher .

Baltl mainly worked on the field of legal archeology , which he defines as the research into the objects of use of legal life understood in a broad sense, i.e. its devices (this is how he differentiates legal archeology from legal folklore and legal symbolism).

From 1956 he was a member of the State Historical Commission for Styria . In 1974 he became a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In addition, he founded the "media studies course" at his university in 1974, which he led until 1995. Among his more than 160 academic papers, his multiple published work Austrian Legal History was included. From the beginning to the present to a standard work of Austrian legal history.

Baltl, himself the recipient of the Dr. Josef Bick Medal of Honor from the Association of Austrian Librarians , has repeatedly awarded a Dr. Hermann Baltl Prize , which sought to promote work or research projects related to library or book history with a relationship to Austria.

His granddaughter, Anna Gamper , was appointed the first full professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Innsbruck in 2008.
