Gerry Carroll (born April 27, 1987 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish politician of the People Before Profit Alliance (PBPA), for which he became the first member of the Northern Ireland Assembly in the election for the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2016 .

biography

Carroll grew up with six siblings as the child of Geraldine and Gerry Carroll in Andersonstown , a district in western Belfast. The first electoral success of his political career, in which he was previously primarily involved in activist political strategies, came when he was elected to the city parliament of Belfast in 2014, where he represented the Black Mountain region from 2014 to 2016.

In the 2016 election for the Northern Ireland Assembly in the electoral district of West Belfast, Carroll received 8,299 first-time preferences and thus won this district. He was able to defend his mandate in the new election held in 2017 .

Political classification

As an activist, Gerry Carroll was primarily involved in movements against poverty and war . Since he primarily appeals to the class , Carroll defines himself neither as an Irish nationalist (or as a representative of Irish republicanism ) nor as a unionist , but as a revolutionary socialist .
