Julius Rollmann

Julius Ernst August Hermann Rollmann (born December 13, 1827 in Soest , † April 30, 1865 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Rollmann came to Düsseldorf early on to study with the decorative painter Ludwig Pose . At the same time he attended the elementary class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1844/1845. He studied at the Berlin Academy for several years . From this he received the "Small Golden Medal for Art" in 1862. In 1853 he settled back in Düsseldorf, where he became a member of the Malkasten artists' association . From there he went on trips, to the Bavarian mountains (1855) and to Northern Italy (1858, 1863). He stayed for some time in Munich and the surrounding area, including the Brannenburg artists' colony , where in the early 1860s he met other Düsseldorf artists for annual study visits, such as Ludwig Hugo Becker , Carl Irmer , Wilhelm Busch and Christian Kröner . After his untimely death, Rollmann was soon forgotten, but when the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen organized the exhibition “Older Düsseldorf Landscape Painting” in 1919 on the occasion of the centenary of the Düsseldorf Art Academy , his pictures were mainly those of the school of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer be assigned a big surprise. “Who is Julius Rollmann?” Asked Walter Cohen in the preface to the exhibition catalog.
