Ludwig Hugo Becker , also Louis Hugo Becker (born July 19, 1833 in Wesel , † December 25, 1868 in Düsseldorf ), was a German painter , draftsman and etcher of the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Becker grew up in Wesel on the Lower Rhine and attended grammar school there - together with the later painters Ernst Bosch and Ernst von Bernuth , among others . The painter Hendrik Lot , whose private student Becker became in 1850, taught here as a drawing teacher . Together with the teacher as well as Ernst Bosch, the later painter Ernst von Raven , the lithographer Wilhelm Düms and others, he drew after the living model in evening classes. In the summer of 1851, landscape studies in the vicinity of Wesel were made in the summer of 1851 in preparation for the studies and specifically for the creation of the template folder to be submitted. With the specialty copper engraver he entered the "Antikensaal" under Karl Ferdinand Sohn at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1852 and also attended the building class under Rudolf Wiegmann . In 1853 he was a student in the landscape class of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer , from 1854 to 1860 in the painting class of Hans Fredrik Gude . From 1859 he made numerous study trips to the Rhine and Moselle, to Hesse (to the Willingshausen painters' colony ), to the Baltic Sea, to Normandy and Switzerland as well as to Italy and - together with Wilhelm Busch , Carl Irmer , Christian Kröner and Julius Rollmann - to the Upper Bavarian Brannenburg . From 1857 Becker was a member of the artists' association Malkasten and from 1865 of the art association for the Rhineland and Westphalia .

He showed his work in the annual exhibitions of the Düsseldorf Art Association and in the "permanent art exhibitions" of the art dealers Eduard Schulte and Bismeyer & Kraus in Düsseldorf and, above all, in Berlin. Etchings and lithographs based on his works have appeared in the Düsseldorf youth album ( Der Einsiedler , Die Schaukel , 1859), in the German artist album ( Abendlandschaft , 1859), in the Düsseldorf artist album ( Die Schöne Luft , 1859; Sommer. 1866) as well as in the magazine for visual arts ( Wassermühle im Walde , 1863). Becker was represented with illustrations in numerous publications, including in the Düsseldorf picture folder , in the album German Art and Poetry , in German picture sheets for young and old , in German Ballad Treasure , edited by Gustav Wendt.
