Gertrud Rask (ship)

The Gertrud Rask was an ice-going steamship operated by the Royal Greenland Trading Company with home port in Copenhagen . The merchant ship , built in 1923 in Nakskov , Denmark , was named after Gertrud Rask , wife of the Greenlandic "national saint " Hans Egede .

Construction and technology

The 47.4 meter long four-masted steam schooner was launched on June 23, 1923 with hull number 15 on the Danish Nakskov Skibsværft .

history

In addition to commercial goods, the ship also transported explorers. The steamship supported Alfred Wegener's German-Greenland expedition in 1930/31 and a Dutch expedition led by Jaap (Jacob) van Zuylen to Tasiilaq in 1932 .

During the Second World War , the Gertrud Rask got caught in a storm on February 7, 1942 near Bantam Rock off Nova Scotia and sank. The crew was rescued by Canadian fishermen who were awarded the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct for the rescue .

The Greenland Post depicted Gertrud Rask on a postage stamp.
