Kultuurkapitali kirjanduspreemia

The literary prize of the Eesti Kultuurkapital Foundation ( Estonian Eesti Kultuurkapitali kirjanduspreemia ) has in the past and is still used to describe various prizes awarded annually by the Estonian state-run Eesti Kultuurkapital Foundation . A distinction must be made between two price levels:

Annual price

The annual prize is awarded in various cultural fields, one of which covers the literary area. It amounted to € 7,000 in 2016, and the award winner is chosen by the Board of Trustees on the proposal of the Commission for Literature

Genre price

The genre prize (Estonian: Kirjanduse sihtkapitali aastapreemia ) is currently awarded in ten sub-categories and amounted to € 5,000 in 2016. The following categories are represented:

  • Poetry
  • Children's literature
  • drama
  • Essay writing
  • Translation into Estonian
  • Translation from Estonian into a foreign language
  • Article, criticism
  • Russian-language literature
  • Free category

history

The price has had its current name since 1995. It was launched in February 1970 by the Estonian SSR Writers' Union. From 1972 to 1989 the award was named "Juhan Smuul Prize for Literature" ( Juhan Smuuli nimeline kirjanduse aastapreemia ). It was named after the writer Juhan Smuul (1922–1971).

The prize was awarded in the categories of fiction, poetry, drama, children's and youth literature, essay writing and literary translation from and into Estonian. There was also a prize for a Russian-speaking author. From 1990 to 1992 it was awarded as the “Annual Literature Prize of the Estonian Writers' Union ” ( Eesti Kirjanike Liidu aastapreemia ). In 1993 and 1994 there were no winners.
