Arne Merilai

Arne Merilai (born April 27, 1961 in Kohtla-Järve ) is an Estonian literary scholar and writer.

Life

Merilai graduated from high school in 1979 in Kehra and then studied Estonian philology at the University of Tartu . After graduating in 1984, he worked for a year as a teacher at a Tartu grammar school, after which he took a doctoral position at the University of Tartu. From 1988 he worked at various research institutions, after receiving his doctorate in 1990, he taught at the University of Tartu. He spent the 2001-2002 academic year as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley . He was then a literary professor at the University of Tartu, where he has held the Chair of Estonian Literature since 2011.

Merilai has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 2001 .

Scientific work

In his scientific research, Merilai often deals with psychoanalytic methods and has looked at numerous Estonian authors from this point of view. His focus is on poetry. In doing so, he developed a theory of artistic linguistic usage, which he describes with the term “pragmapoetics”. The concepts of pragmatics and poetics known from philosophy, literary studies and linguistics are interwoven. This theory led to much detailed analysis of the poetry of individual poets.

Literary work

Merilai made his poetry debut in 1994 and published a first volume of poetry in 1998, followed by the next in 2001. Characteristic of his poetry are the many word games that begin with the anagram of his name in the title of the first collection: Merlini aare ('Merlin's treasure'). Many critics brought him close to Ilmar Laaban or Artur Alliksaar , as another critic affirmed. According to him, Merilai appears “like an ecologist roaming in a forest near the city. This forest does not consist of trees, bushes, mosses, mushrooms, etc., but of speech phenomena that follow different styles. ”The poet uses“ Estonian folk poetry and Artur Alliksaar ”as points of reference.

His only novel to date, the tyrant Oedipus , which has many postmodern elements and is characterized by lexical inventiveness, met with a great response . The first sentence of a review is already telling: “The tyrant Oedipus leads us in the improbable, but refreshing and unstoppable company of a feminist, a psychoanalyst, a junkist and an art historian and under the orgasmic-military (an expression of Marina Grišakova) observation of the Italian fascists to a symposium that took place in a gloomy crypt of Bertinoro Castle in 1938, where a mummy of King Oedipus, recently excavated and inhabited by a thousand year old mushroom cultures, is why it was still alive at a certain level and through a technological apparatus made for the respective case could also communicate in places. ”Another critic found the novel tiring on the one hand, but saw parallels to Umberto Eco on the other hand and admired the“ fireworks of linguistic puns, quotations and associations. ”
