Käbi Alma Laretei (born July 14, 1922 in Tartu , † October 31, 2014 in Stockholm ) was an Estonian concert pianist .

Early years

Käbi Laretei was born as the younger daughter of the Estonian politician and diplomat Heinrich Laretei (1892–1973). Because of her father's professional activity, she spent her youth in Moscow from 1926 to 1928 and in Kaunas from 1928 to 1930 . From 1936 to 1940 she studied piano at the Estonian Music Academy in Tallinn . Her father Heinrich Laretei was the Estonian envoy in Stockholm during the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940 . With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the family remained in exile in Sweden .

pianist

From 1947 to 1950 Käbi Laretei studied composition with the Estonian composer Eduard Tubin, who was also in exile, and piano with Gottfried Boon and Annie Fischer . She made her debut as a pianist in 1946 at the Stockholm Concert Hall .

Since the early 1960s in particular, Käbi Laretei has had great success as a concert pianist, including in Great Britain , Germany , Sweden and the USA . She also performed at Carnegie Hall and the White House .

Ingmar Bergman

From 1950 to 1959 she was married to the chief conductor of the Gävleborgs läns orkesterförening , Gunnar Staern (1922–2011). In 1959 she married the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman . She was musical advisor and composer for several Bergman films (including Autumn Sonata and Face to Face ) and played a small role in Fanny and Alexander . In 1962 their son, the Swedish film director Daniel Bergman , was born. The marriage between Käbi Laretei and Ingmar Bergman failed in 1966 and divorced in 1969.

In 1967 Käbi Laretei became chairman of the Swedish Musicians' Association (Svenska Tonkonstnärsförbundet - STKF) and in 1968 a member of the Royal Music Academy (Kungliga Musikaliska academies) .

Writer

In addition to her musical career, Käbi Laretei was a music teacher and a popular presenter on Swedish television . She has also published several Swedish-language works on music as well as autobiographical books.
