Valeria Ränik

Valeria Ränik (actually Valeria Poprjänik , born August 19, 1964 in Moscow ) is an Estonian writer.

Life

Valeria Ränik's ancestors were Estonians who emigrated to the Caucasus in the 19th century . She went to school in Moscow and learned Estonian as an autodidact with the help of written materials. From 1981 to 1987 she also studied in Moscow and graduated as an electronics engineer. At the same time, she was active in the Moscow department of the Soviet Writers' Union before moving to Estonia in 1988.

In Estonia, she studied Estonian language and literature at the University of Tartu from 1988 and graduated in 1996 with a bachelor's degree . She has been living as a freelance writer in southern Estonia since 2014.

Valeria Ränik has been a member of the Estonian Writers ' Union since 1991 .

Literary work

Valeria Ränik made her debut (still as Valeria Poprjänik) with poems in 1986 in the then newly founded magazine Vikerkaar . Shortly thereafter, she joined forces with Jüri Ehlvest , Kauksi Ülle , Sven Kivisildnik and Karl Martin Sinijärv to form the group "Hirohall", which was partly responsible for a literary awakening during the Singing Revolution . The most important concept of this group was the so-called ethnofuturism , which Ränik symbolized insofar as she had made a conscious decision to be Estonian.

When her first two volumes of poetry appeared in 1990, she became the first recipient of the debut prize named after Betti Alver (together with Jaan Undusk , who received the prose prize). The two books were widely discussed and praised, mostly emphasizing the origin of the author. According to Mati Unt , the author had "... enough of the Russian horror that surrounds her and fled to the dancing and singing Estonians." The other volumes of poetry were also frequently reviewed and sometimes positively received, for example Ruth Jyrjo drew a parallel to Ene Mihkelson . In the following volumes of poetry, however, the criticism reacted increasingly disappointing, with one critic even headed his review with “Yes, completely wrong”.

In the 21st century, the author focuses on non-fiction and nature conservation and hardly takes part in literary life.
