Lauri summer
Lauri Sommer (until 1991 Lauri Soomere , born April 2, 1973 in Jämejala , Viljandi municipality ) is an Estonian poet , literary scholar , translator and musician.
Life
Sommer graduated from high school in Viljandi in 1991 and then studied librarianship for a year at the Viljandi Culture Academy . After his military service (1992/1993), he began studying Estonian Philology at the University of Tartu in 1994 , which he completed in 2003 with a master's thesis on Uku Masing . Today he lives as a freelance writer in Räestu and Tartu .
With Aare Pilv , Kristiina Ehin , Kalju Kruusa , Mehis Heinsaar and others, Sommer also belonged to the literary group Erakkond, which was founded in 1996 . He has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1999 .
Literary work
Sommer made his newspaper debut in 1990 and later participated in Erakkond's joint publications . His first volume of poetry appeared in 1998, which he had more follow every three years. His poetry is clearly influenced by Uku Masing, which finds its expression in a certain shamanic religiosity and magical elements. But already in a review of his debut volume, comparisons with other Estonian poets such as Ernst Enno , Marie Heiberg , Peep Ilmet or Jaan Kaplinski were made . Later in the criticism, comparisons with Georg Trakl were drawn.
Sommer's prose is usually set in southern Estonia and uses the southern Estonian in places. Parallels to Kauksi Ülle can be seen here, which can also be interpreted as an influence. In calm images, the author moves on the borderline between documentary prose and memoir, which evoked associations with the German author WG Sebald in one reviewer .
Although the author's peculiarity is that he consistently uses the “y” while the normal Estonian written language uses the “ü”, he also has conservative elements. One critic stated simply: “He is not ashamed of being old-fashioned.” This mixture leads to the fact that his work is increasingly read and appreciated, as the large number of literary prizes and the regular reviews in the most important magazines are proof of.
In addition, as a translator for u. a. Richard Brautigan and Matsuo Bashō appeared.
