Ernst Enno

Ernst Enno (* May 27 jul. / 8. June  1875 greg. In Köödsa, then parish Rannu , Tartu county / Estonia ; † 7. March 1934 in Haapsalu ) was an Estonian poet and children's author.

Life

Ernst Enno was born as the son of the innkeeper and farmer Prits Enno. He spent his childhood on the Soosaare farm near Rõngu . At the age of eight he attended the community school of Lapetukme and then the prestigious Hugo-Treffner-Gymnasium and the Realschule ( Reaalkool ) in Tartu . Since Enno was not accepted at the University of Tartu , he studied from 1896 to 1904 at the Riga Polytechnic (today: Riga Technical University ).

He was already working as a journalist during his time in Riga. After completing his studies, Enno was for a short time in-house counsel at the credit union in Valga and at a trading company in Pärnu . From 1902 to 1904 he was editor of the Postimees newspaper in Tartu and from 1923 to 1925 editor of the Estonian children's magazine Laste Rõõm and other papers. In addition, he worked from 1920 to 1934 as a school clerk in the Lääne district .

In 1909 he married the artist Olga Elfriede Saul († 1974 in exile in England).

Lyrical creation

Ernst Enno's work is shaped by meditative Buddhism and Western mysticism . Enno was also strongly committed to symbolism . The childhood in the country, the stories of the devout mother Ann Enno and the blind grandmother had a formative influence on his literary work. Home, the way and the longing are recurring elements of his poetry .
