Berk Vaher (born June 30, 1975 in Kohtla-Järve ) is an Estonian writer.

Life

Berk Vaher graduated from high school in Viljandi in 1993 and studied English language and literature at the University of Tartu . After graduating there in 1997, he studied at Warwick University , where he obtained his master's degree in 1999 .

Vaher is a lecturer at the University of Tartu and also active as a translator from English and editor of literary magazines. He has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 2002 . From 2005 to 2011 and again since 2014, Vaher is the chairman of the association's Tartu department.

Literary work

Vaher made his debut with short prose in 1999 as part of the literary group "Erakkond", which also included Kristiina Ehin , Mehis Heinsaar , Kalju Kruusa and Aare Pilv . His first narrow volume with novellas and a poem was followed in the same year, but caused a greater sensation, by his second collection Clouds on the Asphalt (2000).

One critic spoke of “baroque, mannerist heaviness” and drew a comparison with Friedebert Tuglas .

Vaher's other works were later repeatedly highlighted as a linguistic special achievement - for example, his novel Epos was compared with Finnegans Wake by James Joyce .
