Olev Remsu (formerly Remsujev , born November 1, 1947 in Tartu ) is an Estonian writer .

Life

Olev Remsu was born the son of a Karelian train driver and an Estonian gardener and went to school in Tartu from 1955 to 1966. From 1966 to 1972 he studied at the University of Tartu , which he left as a trained journalist in 1972. He then worked in the editorial offices of the newspapers Noorte Hääl (1972–1975) and Sirp ja Vasar (1977–1978). From 1979 to 1982 he then did additional training in film dramaturgy with Valentin Tschernych in Moscow . From 1982 to 1985 he worked at Tallinnfilm . In addition, he "took on a variety of odd jobs: meliorator , transport worker, salesman, sailor, stoker, cattle transporter, snake hunter, guide and asphalt paver."

Olev Remsu was a member of the literary group Wellesto , in which he played a leading role. He later used the group's name to designate his own publishing house. He has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1988 .

Remsu made his debut in a student almanac in 1966 and published his first book in 1976. A few more sporadic publications followed in the 1980s, in which he addressed the "development of the beat culture", but the author did not reach his greatest productivity until 1991 with the restoration of Estonia's independence.

A turning point was his novel Trauerspiel in Babel , which appeared in 1989, when Soviet censorship had not yet been completely abolished, but had been significantly reduced. It was written between 1983 and 1986 and is an anti-totalitarian dystopia that has been compared to George Orwell's 1984 novel .

In his later works memories and travel descriptions dominate, for example, in the titles of his works alone, in addition to the aforementioned Babel, “Oxford, Moscow, Prague, Paris, London and China [appear]; only a small number of his books are played in Estonia from ”- this was the status of 2006. After that, the equally keen traveler and writer added a number of other travelogues to his oeuvre.
