life and work
Marie Heiberg was born into poor conditions in the country. She attended the parish school in Urvaste and then the parish school in Sangaste . Heiberg devoted himself to literature early on. Her first poems were published in Linda magazine at the age of 14 . In 1905 Heiberg published some poems in the anthology Võitluse päivil ("In the days of struggle") by Friedebert Tuglas . She was considered a literary prodigy in her time.
When Marie Heiberg was 16 years old, her first volume of poetry, Mure-lapse laulud ("Songs of a Problem Child") was published. From 1907 she lived in Tartu . Her second (and last) volume of poetry followed in 1913, Luule ("Poems"). In between is the story Elukevade (" Spring of Life") from 1910.
In 1913 the anthology Moment , which gave the name to a loose literary-artistic group to which Richard Roht and Henrik Visnapuu also belonged , fell in 1913 .
From 1919 at the latest, Marie Heiberg was considered mentally ill after signs of a mental disorder had appeared during the First World War . After hospital stays, she moved around and pretended to be the daughter of the executed Tsar Nicholas II . In 1923 she was admitted to the closed psychiatric institution Seevald in Tallinn, where she died in 1942 during the German occupation of Estonia.
In the park of her home village Kirikuküla there is now a monument to Marie Heiberg.
