Ecological watch in the North Caucasus

The Ecological Watch in the North Caucasus (Russian Экологическая вахта по Северному Кавказу, English Ecological Watch on North Caucasus ) is a nature conservation organization in Russia that is committed to the preservation of endangered nature in the North Caucasus and adjacent areas.

Focus of activity

The Ecological Watch organizes activities, information and symposia on the preservation of nature reserves and natural habitats, especially in the Krasnodar region with Sochi , in the Kuban region , in the Adygea , Kabardino-Balkaria , Dagestan and Karachay-Cherkessia republics .

The UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Western Caucasus has been protected from interference.

history

The organization was founded in 1997 as an environmental movement. In the following years the organizational structure and name changed, in 2004 it was officially registered as an organization with the Ministry of Justice under the new name "Ecological Watch in the North Caucasus".

Since around 2011 it has attracted international attention with broad protests against massive encroachments on nature, including in nature reserves in preparation for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in 2014. Several members were arrested, and Yevgeny Vitischko was sentenced to three years in a prison camp. The organization was legally dissolved.

It has been approved again since 2015, but is still under pressure. There were attacks on expedition camps and members' homes. On September 13, 2016, it was registered with the Ministry of Justice as a " social organization acting as a foreign agent ".
