Ülo Mattheus (born December 7, 1956 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer and journalist.

life and work

Ülo Mattheus graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1975. He has been a writer since 1977. Mattheus was also an editor at Radio Free Europe , in the political department of the Estonian daily Postimees and press spokesman for the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ).

Ülo Mattheus focuses in his literature on the psychology of humans and often stands out from the concrete world. In his work he deals with the influences of East Asian philosophy. His novels contain strong elements of magical realism . Occasionally he uses quotations from Jorge Luis Borges .

In 1985 and 1994 he was awarded the renowned Friedebert Tuglas Prize for two of his novellas .
