Margus Laidre

Margus Laidre (born  September 18, 1959 in Tartu ) is an Estonian diplomat and historian. From 1996 to 2000 he was the ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to Germany .

Life

Margus Laidre graduated from Tartu State University (TRÜ) with a degree in history in 1982 . In 1982/83 he was chief archivist of the Tartu City Museum. In 1987 he became a candidate for science . Laidre obtained his doctorate in history in 2000. phil. From 1987 to 1991 he was a lecturer in history in Tartu. He is considered one of the leading experts on the history of Northern Europe in the 17th century.

diplomat

When Estonia regained its independence, Margus Laidre entered the diplomatic service in his country. From 1991 to 1996 he was the first Estonian ambassador to Sweden . From 1996 to 2000 Laidre was the ambassador of the Republic of Estonia in Germany , initially in Bonn , then in Berlin . From 1997 to 2000 he was also accredited as Estonian Ambassador to the Holy See . From 2000 to 2005 Margus Laidre worked as the head of the political department in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tallinn . From 2005 he was the Estonian Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

From 2010 Laidre was foreign policy advisor to Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves .

From 2014 to 2018 he was the Estonian Ambassador to Finland. He has been the Estonian ambassador to the Russian Federation since 2018.
