Vahur Afanasjev (born August 24, 1979 in Tartu ) is an Estonian writer .

Life

Vahur Afanasjev went to school in Tartu from 1986 to 1998 and then studied at the University of Tartu . After completing his bachelor's degree in economics (2002), he continued his studies in media studies , but without obtaining a degree here. He then worked in various positions as a journalist, copywriter and media analyst.

Afanasjev lived in Brussels from 2005 to 2010 . He has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 2006 .

Vahur Afanasjev made his debut with poems in Vikerkaar in 1998 and published his first collection of poems in 2000, which was followed by a collection of novels two years later. Afanasjev's unconventional and lively writing style quickly found a positive reception in the criticism. In his novel, The Castrato from Ontario , a reviewer drew comparisons with August Gailit , and his poetry was found to be somewhat similar to the work of Jaan Kaplinski , whom Afanasjev also likes to quote. References were also made to foreign writers, such as Kurt Vonnegut .

Afanasjev is also active as a musician and has also released several CDs.
