Vaino vahing (* 15. February 1940 in the village Aravu, rural community Meeksi , Estonia ; † 23. March 2008 in Tartu , Estonia) was an Estonian writer and psychiatrist .

life and work

Vaino Vahing graduated from the Medical Faculty of Tartu State University in 1961 ( Estonian Tartu Riiklik Ülikool ). In 1971 he received his doctorate in medicine as a candidate for science . From 1963 to 1965 Vahin was employed in a hospital in Jämejala and from 1967 in a clinic in Tartu. From 1975 to 1981 he taught at Tartu State University as a lecturer . Vahing was represented in numerous criminal trials as a forensic psychiatrist.

Vaino Vahing became known to a larger audience primarily as a prose writer and playwright. Vahing's psychoanalytic background plays a major role in his works . The human being is influenced in his behavior by the subconscious.

From 1973 Vahing belonged to the Estonian Writers' Union . In 1975 he was awarded the State Prize of the Estonian SSR and in 1982 the Friedebert Tuglas Prize . In 1991 he received the Annual Culture Prize and in 1996 the Culture Prize of the Republic of Estonia.

Private life

Vaino Vahing was married to the writer Maimu Berg and, after the divorce, to the actress and singer Heli Vahing. His daughter from his first marriage is the lawyer Julia Laffranque , who is now a judge at the Estonian State Court ( Riigikohus ).
