Julia Laffranque (born July 25, 1974 in Tartu ) is an Estonian lawyer , professor, judge at the European Court of Human Rights.

Julia Laffranque was born Julia Vahing in the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic . Her parents were the writer and psychiatrist Vaino Vahing (1940-2008) and his first wife, the writer Maimu Berg (* 1945). The parents divorced in 1979.

Julia Laffranque graduated from the University of Tartu in 1997 with a degree in law . In 1994/95 she spent an exchange year at the University of Hamburg . In 1998 she completed a postgraduate course with a Magister legum (LL.M.) at the University of Münster . In 2002 she continued her education at the University of Kiel and at the European University Institute in Florence . 2003 doctorate Julia Laffranque to Dr. iur. at the University of Tartu.

From 1996 to 2004 Julia Laffranque was employed in the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Estonia. She played a major role in the preparations for Estonian accession to the European Union . From 2004 to 2010 Laffranque was a judge at the Estonian State Court ( Riigikohus ) in Tartu. From 1999 to 2006 she taught European Law at the University of Tartu and became Professor of European Law in 2011.

In 2010 Julia Laffranque was elected Estonian judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). On January 1, 2011, she succeeded Rait Maruste . Her term of office ended on January 3, 2020. Her successor was Peeter Roosma .

Julia Laffranque has also published numerous legal articles in Estonian and international journals.

Awards

In 2004 Julia Laffranque received the French award Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite . The following year she was awarded the Order of the White Star (4th category) by the Estonian President . In 2013 she was voted "European" of the year in Estonia

Private life

Julia Laffranque is married to the French lawyer Rodolphe Laffranque. The couple has three sons. She is an amateur actress with the Tagora Teater and Vilde Teater and has played in numerous roles.
