Aleksander Suuman (born April 25, 1927 in the village of Metsaküla, then Simuna parish , Avanduse rural community , Virumaa , Estonia ; † April 19, 2003 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian poet and painter.

life and work

Aleksander Suuman was born into a farmer's family. He attended school in Väike-Maarja from 1942 to 1947 . From 1947 to 1954 he studied art at the State Art Institute of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic (now the Estonian Art Academy ). From 1954 to 1958 he worked as a drawing teacher in Rakvere , then from 1957 to 1975 as an art teacher at the Tartu Art School. As a freelance artist, he lived on the island of Vilsandi . From 1980 he was a lecturer at the Tallinn Art Institute .

He often worked under the estonized form of his name, Suumani Sass .

Suuman made his debut as a poet in 1963 with the poetry collection Oh seda inimest! that caused a stir. In the following volumes of poetry, starting with natural poetry, he increasingly moved people into the focus of his poems. His almost aphoristic poems, which distinguish him as an attentive and precise observer of life, were formative. Suuman experimented a lot in his poetry. Some echoes of concrete poetry are visible.

Suuman's lyrics have been translated into numerous languages. In 2002, shortly before his death, he received the literature prize from the state Kultuurkapital foundation .
