Peeter Sauter (born March 11, 1962 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian writer.

Biography and writing

Peeter Sauter worked as a night watchman and security guard from 1978 to 1992. He is also a trained actor and director. In 1988 he made his debut as a writer in the literary magazine Vikerkaar . After Estonian regained independence, he worked for some time at The Blackie cultural center in Liverpool .

Peeter Sauter works as a culture editor, copywriter, journalist and writer in Tallinn . His provocative and offensive prose describes his view of today's Estonian society in a ruthless and vulgar way. The protagonists of his works are mostly stuck in existential questions - which they try to answer with grotesque and absurd ideas.

Sauter's banal conversational tone, topics such as sex, women, alcohol and motorcycles, and his attempt to establish himself as the enfant terrible of Estonian literature are characteristic of the works . In 1998, Peeter Sauter caused a major scandal when, in an article for Looming magazine, on the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, he denigrated the Estonian flag with numerous fecal expressions and swear words.

Sauter likes to describe himself as a copy writer . His book Luus is partly a plagiarism of his own novel Indigo .
