Edgar Valter
Edgar Valter (born September 21, 1929 in Tallinn , † March 4, 2006 in Tartu ) was one of the most important contemporary children's book authors, illustrators and caricaturists in Estonia .
Life
Valter was the fourth of eight children. After graduating from middle school in 1945, he made his way as a locksmith, sailor, transport worker and printer. Since 1950 he has been working as a freelance artist. He became a member of the Estonian Artists 'Union in 1956 and a member of the Writers ' Union of the Estonian SSR in 1958 .
He illustrated over 250 books, most of them children's books, and became one of Estonia's most famous illustrators. His work includes a. the Estonian children's books Naksitrallid (German: Three Funny Fellows ), Sipsik (German: Flickerl / Reggi ), Maari suvi (German: Maaris Summer ) and Maja metsa ääres (German: The house on the edge of the forest ) by Eno Raud , Triinu ja Taavi jutud ( German stories about Triinu and Taavi ) by Ellen Niit , Kunksmoor (German Die Kunksmuhme ) by Aino Pervik and Nublu (German Nublu ) by Jaan Rannap . There are also countless graphic works, bookplates , film and theater sets and caricatures .
In 1994 he published the children's book Pokuraamat , which he wrote and provided with drawings, and which became one of the best-known Estonian children's books. It was followed by the volumes Pokuaabits and Pokulood . The books are about the Pokus (Estonian Pokud ), human-like mythical creatures who strive for a life in harmony with nature and themselves.
