Rein Raud (born December 21, 1961 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer and Japanologist .

Life

Rein Raud graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1980. He then studied Japanese studies at Leningrad University until 1985 . From 1989 to 1995 Raud was a lecturer for Japanese language and culture at the Humanitaarinstituut in Tallinn, then professor for Japanese language and culture at the University of Helsinki . From 1992 to 1996 Raud was President of the Estonian PEN Club, from 2006 to 2011 he was Rector of Tallinn University .

Rein Raud has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1985 .

Private

Rein Raud was born the son of the Estonian writers Eno Raud (1928–1996) and Aino Pervik (* 1932). His grandfather was the writer Mart Raud (1903–1980). The artist and children's book author Piret Raud is his sister, the musician, politician and writer Mihkel Raud is his brother.

Rein Raud is married to the Lithuanian Rosita Raud. The couple have a son and a daughter.

Literary work

Rein Raud made his debut as a student with prose pieces in 1973 and presented his first volume of poetry before his 20th birthday. After three more volumes of poetry and two plays, he switched to prose in 1990.

Here he began a historical novel about the live prince Kaupo , who was one of the first Livs to switch to Christianity in the Middle Ages. Books in almost every genre followed: short stories, philosophical essays and novels. With the latter in particular, he has achieved his greatest successes when one takes awards and translations into foreign languages ​​as a yardstick.

Der Bruder (2008) is referred to as a spaghetti western and has been characterized as such by the author himself. The Reconstruction (2012), which was awarded the prose prize of the cultural capital, examines the reasons why a young woman falls under the spell of a sect and takes part in a collective suicide. At the same time, a picture of Soviet and post-Soviet society is drawn. The Death of the Completed Movement (2015), which was shortlisted for the prose prize of Kulturkapital, is a short novel with elements of crime fiction about the last years of the Soviet era in Estonia. In an oppressive way he works out the procedure of the Soviet secret service in the phase of the Singing Revolution .

Rein Raud has also submitted translations from Japanese and, like Jaan Kaplinski , ensures "the introduction of the Asian element into Estonian culture without forgetting the occidental tradition."
